Last night a feud erupted on Twitter between Donald Trump, leader the extreme right wing of the GOP and Mitch McConnell leader of the Conservative right wing of the GOP when Trump published a scathing (and asinine) rebuttal of McConnell’s post-Impeachment tirade against Trump. Witnessing this degrading public party infighting in real time is somewhat amusing. But don’t laugh too long. McConnell is pushing Kentucky Republicans to pass Bill 228, which would force Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear a Democrat to select only a Republican to fill McConnell’s seat should McConnell leave before his six year term ends. This is very troubling.
Normal folks don’t read political polls like they are divine astrological charts, but soulless professional operators like McConnell and Trump do. Trump would never have released that letter if he wasn’t 100% assured his craven small-check-writing base would explode with pleasure. And Mitch wouldn’t be working behind the scenes on Bill 228 if he didn’t smell blood in the water.
There are three possibilities at the midterm elections of 2022; The Democrats maintain control of the Senate, the Republicans regain the Senate by electing Right Wing extremists, or they regain the Senate with Mitch approved candidates. The third option is becoming the least likely. Every indicator shows that the shift away from McConnell’s caucus is real and lasting. Mitch is the epitome of an institutionalist. If he loves one thing it is the United States Senate. Young anti-institutionalist thugs like Josh Hawley are itching to kick him to the curb. McConnell will be 80 in two years, we’d like nothing more than to see the back of him. However if a Republican replaces him, they will be 100X worse.
