Yippee, it’s CPAC time. This year the annual get-together of Conservative Republicans and their donors takes place at the Hyatt in Orlando, FL where four days flattery and bullshit will flow along with champagne and liberal tears. One of the primary themes is Cancel Culture which is fitting since the featured star is of course the guy who lost the presidential election then 60 subsequent lawsuits trying to cancel the results. An insult to normal people everywhere, CPAC is a bounty of riches for late night hosts and Twitter pundits.
Many Republican Congresspersons, skipped out of DC to attend CPAC this weekend, citing worries about Covid-19 as the reason they couldn’t be on the floor to vote on legislation including the Covid-19 Relief Bill. Ted Cruz worked some schtick in his routine at the event today when he shot back at John Boehner who reportedly told Cancun Cruz to go f- himself while recording his book. “Who’s John Boehner,” Cruz snorted to tepid applause. Ted then continued, “the Republican Party is not the party of the country clubs, but the party of hardworking, blue-collar men and women,” conveniently forgetting that Trump literally lives at a country club and used Mar a Lago as the “Southern White House” for his entire term. We could laugh, or cry, at the giant gold statue of the Donald in stars ‘n stripes board shorts and there will be plenty more to come. All of this rightly deserves the derision it will receive.
What is truly creepy though perhaps shockingly on point, is the design of the stage at CPAC. It is the Odal Rune, a symbol that was routinely used by the Nazis in place of the swastika, as was immediately called out by The Daily Beans Podcast. In light of the heavy Jewish attendance at CPAC, there is even a special Shabbat/Purim service sponsored by the Young Jewish Conservatives, this blatant Nazi symbolism is truly disturbing. Whatever is going on in the GOP it is dangerous and deserves careful monitoring.
ummmm what Marvel/High-Castle multui-verse are we living in...?
